Aerial Tramway to Prospect Mountain

When you arrive in Estes Park, Colorado your first stop should be the tram dock below Prospect Mountain, elevation 8,700 feet. Travel 1,100 feet up the mountain to spectacular views of Estes Valley and Lake Estes below, 14,255 foot Longs Peak within Rocky Mountain National Park, and the Continental Divide.

The ten passenger cabin flies up the mountain in only five minutes, an exciting yet extremely safe adventure. Once on top of Prospect Mountain you can explore many hiking trails, pick the perfect spot for a picnic, and enjoy panoramic views. The tram is open from Mid May to Mid September.

The first tramways designed in the United States were used to transport materials in mines before 1900. Although tramways transported passengers in the Swiss Alps by 1874, it took tramways in the US until the 1930s to catch on. The Estes Park Aerial Tramway was built by Robert Heron, who helped design tramways in Italy and Germany during WWII. The tramways he built in Europe traveled the entire distance from base to summit without support towers. Because of the steep mountains, wire ropes hung freely between top and bottom. Heron designed the Estes Park Aerial Tramway in the same manner, making the ride much smoother than other tramways in the country. The Estes Park Aerial Tram opened in 1955.
