Historic Stanley Hotel
Built in 1909, the Stanley Hotel of Estes Park, Colorado is located among some of the most beautiful mountains of the world. The hotel and its grounds are considered one of importance on the National Register of Historic Places. Its spectacular views, proximity to trails and explorations in the Rocky Mountains, and fabulous ghost stories make this sight desirable among many.
The hotel has 135 rooms, many of which have views of the Rockies, Longs Peak, as well as Lump Ridge. Come for a romantic getaway or for some privacy within the mountains. The premises are great for weddings and conferences as well. The hotel is located 70 miles from Denver and only 6 miles from the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.
Stanley Hotel is most well known for inspiring Stephen King's "The Shining." Stephen King stayed in room 217, where he wrote half of his well known book. But there are many more ghost stories that originate within the hotel other than the thrilling Stephen King novel. The fourth floor is most popular for ghost activity and room 418 is the most active altogether. It is said that the sound of children playing in the halls is common. It is also common to hear the late Mr. Stanley, the hotel's original owner, playing the piano and playing pool in the billiards room. The Stanley Hotel offers Ghost Story presentations every Friday and Saturday night as well as hotel tours. Tour the grounds in about an hour and a half and learn much about its architecture, its historic role within Estes Valley, and many haunting tales.
From Denver follow Highway 36 to Estes Park. Drive straight through the St. Vrain, also known as Highway 7, stoplight and continue on to East Wonderview. Stanley Hotel is located at the second right.
