The Colorado River begins in Rocky Mountain National Park and flows about 1500 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. The Upper Colorado River, therefore, is just a small section of this massive body of water. Small it may be, but it is full of fun adventures and beautiful scenery for fishing, rafting, and kayaking enthusiasts. The Upper Colorado begins near Kremmling and travels through mainly class I and II rapids. The scenery varies from deep canyon walls to ranch land.
The rafting season on the Upper Colorado River runs from April through September. There are two different ways to run the Upper Colorado, through Gore Canyon or by Float Trip. Gore Canyon offers class IV and V rapids for only the bravest rafters. For a mellow float trip there are sections of river that pass through the Gore Range and hit only a few class I and II rapids.
Fly fishing enthusiasts will be happy to know that the Upper Colorado may fish better than other parts of this major river simply because there is such easy access to the waters. With great State Wildlife access and parking lots you can literally drive up to your fishing spot. The Upper Colorado is also quite shallow in sections, allowing fisher-people to wade across vast stretches of water. The waters of the Upper Colorado are known for Brown and Rainbow Trout fishing.
