Grand County Sled Dog Classic
Grand County is known as "Colorado's Sled Dog Racing Capital". Hundreds of canine athletes and their owners return to Grand County, Colorado annually to participate in the Grand County Sled Dog Classic towards the end of February. More than 120 sled dog teams from across the country will participate in this event.
The Grand County Sled Dog Classic is held every year in Granby, Colorado. Grand County is located approximately two hours west of Denver on the western slope of the Continental Divide. This unspoiled, rural area is roughly the size of Delaware. Grand County is home to the winter resort areas of Grand Lake, Silver Creek and Winter Park, as well as the western portion of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Sled dog racing was established in Grand County during the 1930s, and is one of the state's fastest-growing winter spectator sports. The Grand County Sled Dog Classic covers an eight-mile course with three, four, six and eight-dog teams. This dog sledding event is for prize money and points toward the international standing. The Grand County Sled Dog Classic is the only sled dog race in Colorado accredited by the U. S. Sled Dog Sports Foundation, which is seeking Olympic recognition for the sport.
