Overview

The backdrop of the majestic Rockies is only one aspect of pleasure derived from visiting Shadow Mountain Lake. The lake is bordered by Arapaho National Recreation Area and Rocky Mountain National Park, thus providing an amazing array of things to do in the out-of-doors.

Location

To reach Shadow Mountain Lake, Colorado, simply drive north from Granby towards Rocky Mountain National Park on US Highway 34.

Seasons

The lake is accessible all year round but the facilities are closed in wintertime due to ice and snow.

Activities

Shadow Mountain Lake, CO has a wide choice of recreational activities. Below is a listing of only a few:

  • Camping
    In Shadow Mountain Recreation Area you’ll find one campground with 80 campsites twelve miles north of Granby at the south end of the reservoir. There are many other campgrounds nearby and you will find camping at over 8,000 feet is a great experience.
  • Fishing
    Casting a line into this lake will provide healthy sport fish such as salmon, brown and rainbow trout.
  • Boating
    There are two boat ramps to launch your boat on Shadow Mountain Lake and the lake is always full. The scenery is awesome and the jet skiing is simply superb.
  • Hiking
    The favorite trail to take is the East Shore Trail that goes 3.5 miles. Start at the dam on Shadow Mountain Lake and trek to the outside of the town of Grand Lake. Of course, there are numerous trails within Rocky Mountain National Park and Arapaho National Recreation Area.

This marvelous lake covers approximately 1,346 acres, giving lots of space for amazing boating. However, because Shadow Mountain Lake is connected to Grand Lake and Lake Granby, motorized boats can move between the lakes, making for an even richer boating experience.
