Longmont Colorado

Longmont, Colorado is located within Boulder County. It's a city covering 22 square miles, boasting more than 300 days of sunshine a year, and wonderful views of the Rocky Mountains.

Founded in 1871 by members of the Chicago Colony (settlers in the valley), the town of Longmont is home to many high-tech companies. It also has a thriving restaurant scene. Situated 37 miles from Denver, 16 miles from Boulder, and 30 miles from the scenic Trail Ridge Road, you should stop by to have a look for yourself.

The Boulder/Longmont area has the highest concentration of software-related occupations in the entire country, and compared to other cities in the county, Longmont boasts the highest number of people who live and work in the city. Astronaut Vance Brand was born in Longmont, graduating from Longmont High School.

So how did the town get its name? It was named after Major Stephen H. Long, who headed an expedition to the area to explore the St. Vrain River valley in 1820. The name "Longmont" combines his name and the word "mont" from the French word for mountain.

There are plenty of recreational activities going on in Longmont. Enjoy a run down one of Longmont's greenways, or take an evening stroll with the geese at McIntosh Lake. Perhaps you just want to relax and sit on a flat rock by the St. Vrain River, listening to the water and the birds.
