Nederland was built upon mining, primarily gold, silver, and tungsten. Later the area became a destination for those seeking outdoor recreation, the quiet beauty of the mountains, and a slower way of community life.

Summers in Nederland are popular for tourists. Nederland is located only a few miles from the Continental Divide, surrounded by national forest lands and on the edge of the Indian Peak Wilderness Area. Rocky Mountain National Park is within an hour's drive. Visitors can easily start from one of several area trailheads and hike to 12,000 feet above sea level or higher in just a couple of hours. You can walk across a glacier or see for miles from the top of a 13,000' peak. Longs Peak, perhaps the most famous of Colorado's 14ers, is a 12–15 hour hike/climb for those in shape to meet that challenge. You can fish a mountain stream, discover old mining digs, bike along abandoned railroad beds, or have a snack at an alpine lake above timberline.

In the fall of the year thousands of visitors flock to the area to view the spectacular vistas of golden aspens that blanket the nearby hillsides. Fall is also an excellent time for hiking and biking with days that are usually dry and warm.

Winter visitors come to cross-country ski or snowshoe in the back country, or to ski and snowboard at Eldora Mountain Resort. This is one of the fastest growing ski areas in the. There are first-rate facilities for both alpine and Nordic skiing, telemarking and skate skiing, as well as snowboarding. The area is growing in popularity for its location, ease of accessibility (you don't have to worry about traffic on I-70), new facilities, and value for skiers of all ability levels. Private and group lessons are available all season. Open mid-November through mid-April.

Five hotels and motels and over a dozen restaurants, cafes, and coffee houses provide a variety of cuisine and dining options. Live entertainment is often available at one or more of these establishments.
