Backcountry
Rocky Mountain National Park has 416 square miles of rocky ridges and mountain wilderness. In the Park, there are at least 60 different mountains that rise above the 12,000 foot level. The high peaks are the focal point of the park, but the backcountry here also has an abundance of wildflowers, crystal clear, flowing mountain waters and vast thick forests.
In the vast expanse of 416 square miles that comprise the Rocky Mountain National Park, there is definitely something for everyone who enjoys being out of doors and experiencing all that the high mountain atmosphere has to offer. The high mountain peaks and the variety of elevations and accompanying habitats provide many choices of activities for any and all visitors.
There are scenic drives if you'd rather experience the Park from your car and short strolls along gentle trails for the less ambitious. For those who prefer to experience the natural and beautiful surroundings up close and personal, there are many daylong hikes into the backcountry or you can pack in and spend several days. You can backpack into some of the most splendid scenery found anywhere in the world and even climb vertical mountains if you desire.
Take the day to hike into the special areas that Rocky Mountain National Park has to offer and then enjoy the mountain scenery and the array of wildlife that inhabit the area such as bighorn sheep, ptarmigan, coyote and elk.
The region is a National Park and as such it is the responsibility of the visitor to know and follow all the backcountry rules and regulations. You can obtain a copy of the backcountry guide for the area at the ranger stations at the Park or online. The guide will provide you will information to help you plan your backcountry trip, how to obtain a backcountry/wilderness permit, and other details which will make your backcountry camping adventure a fantastic experience. There are many and varied opportunities for camping and hiking in the backcountry wilderness area of Rocky Mountain National Park. There are designated camping sites for individuals, groups, stock sites and even designated winter areas.
