The 359 miles of hiking trails within Rocky Mountain National Park provides endless opportunities for backpackers, hikers and horseback riders. Making their way on the trails, the fly fishers, bird-watchers and photographers discover the splendor that they traveled so far to find. Even during the winter months, the hiking trails are used by snowshoers and cross-country skiers that use them to enjoy the snow covered solitude and tranquility of the forests and meadows.

The Rocky Mountain National Park was first established on January 26, 1915. Rocky Mountain National Park is a spectacular natural monument in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. The mountain peaks within the park range in height from 8,000 feet to 14,259 feet at the top of Longs Peak. Any visitor to the park has a multitude of opportunities to enjoy the fantastic and breathtaking views by traveling on any of the hiking trails within the park. Rocky Mountain National Park can boast of having 359 miles of hiking trails.

Traveling by foot or by horseback on the trails gives you the up close and personal experience of viewing elk, mule deer, moose, bighorn sheep, black bears, coyotes, cougars, eagles, hawks and scores of smaller animals. This is a delightful way to watch the wildlife of the area. If you love to enjoy the sights and smell of wildflowers, then you will not be disappointed during the months of June and July when the vast mountain meadows and mountain slopes are full of brilliant color and aromatic smells. In the fall, a trip on any of the hiking trails brings the travelers into close proximity to the golden colored aspen trees.

If you are up for a challenge, try your expertise on any of the 60 peaks that rise about 12,000 feet. This peaks challenge many intrepid hikers and climbers. A casual stroll along an easy path is also a wonderful way to enjoy the day and all the splendor that can be experienced in Rocky Mountain National Park.
