Weather / Climate
It is nearly impossible to predict the weather in the Rocky Mountains. Conditions can change very rapidly from cold and stormy to hot and sunny in just a matter of minutes. So when planning on visiting Rocky Mountain National Park, be sure to be prepared for any type of weather.
Because of its geographic location and its variations in elevation, Rocky Mountain National Park enjoys four distinct seasons. You can expect cold and windy weather from November through March. The weather in April and May can be unpredictable, while June through August the park is awash in mountain summer splendor. The unpredictable conditions return for September through October. During the unpredictable months, it is not uncommon for there to be unexpected and sudden snow storms.
It is wise to get to know all you can about mountain climates before traveling in the park, especially if you plan on doing any exploring on foot, via bicycle or on horseback. Because of the variations in terrain, the climate and weather conditions can be quite different from one place within the park to another.
A basic rule of thumb is that temperatures can drop about 3-4 degrees for every one thousand feet of elevation gain. So if you plan on climbing up three thousand feet, expect the temperature to drop at least ten degrees. It is always best to plan ahead and have a variety of clothes available for any type of climate, weather and/or adventure.
While in Rocky Mountain National Park, always expect the unexpected.
